Tues 31st Aug - New Mills Youth 1 v 1 Woodley Sports
Somehow this finished in a draw!
A cloudless sky and some late summer sunshine at Church Lane gave a great backdrop to a fantastic performance from New Mills Youth.
With Woodley sitting on top of the league following an impressive three win start to the season you would have expected New Mills to have to battle to stay in this, but following a lot of hard work over the past week in training and with thorough preparation for the squad pre match, New Mills were quickly out of the blocks.
The first 15 minutes had Woodley pinned into their own half with chance after chance created by the New Mills squad playing football at pace and on the ground. Woodley were reduced to clearing the ball up field for Harry Noon, who was excellent throughout, to try and hold the ball and wait for support, which rarely arrived.
It was no surprise when New Mills broke down the right and following a quick one two and half cleared shot, Aidan Muffett lobbed the ball to the back post and into the goal. 1 - 0 New Mills. New Mills continued to pile on the pressure and were unlucky to go in at half time only one to the good, after hitting the bar twice.
1 - 0 HALF TIME
Woodley came back out for the second half early and were immediately more organised, playing at a higher tempo. The game had more flow to it with both teams pushing forward and creating chances. A quick cross into the box from the Woodley left, was half cleared by the new Mills defence and with the ball bouncing around in the box Andy Bailey moved to clear and controlled the ball with his arm. Penalty Woodley, which was cooly put away, sending the New Mills keeper the wrong way. 1 - 1
The game lost a bit of quality in the middle of the half with both teams failing to keep possession, but New Mills looked the more likely to get a winner and created several chances in the last 10 minutes with a fantastic move on the stoke of 90 minutes leading to an Andy Bailey strike which went just wide.
A very enjoyable game to watch and a massive step forward for the New Mills Youth Squad.

Weds 25th Aug - New Mills Youth 0 v 6 Mossley
Sometimes the other team are just better than you
After a good pre season New Mills ran out onto the Church Lane Pitch looking forward to the challenge of their first NWYA league game of the season against a Mossley Team who had opened their account on Sunday beating Marine 'A' 7-1
During the warm up New Mills Striker Robbie Robertson pulled his groin meaning that they started with 15 fit players. Within 10 minutes, and with new Mills struggling to get a foot on the ball, keeper Jack Underwood pushed a fierce 30 yard drive over the bar and dislocated a finger on his right hand. Physio Chris Hughes managed to reset the finger during a 10 minute stoppage to the game and Jack bravely went back in goal to make a save from the subsequent corner.
Mossley, look a very exciting team. Pace, strength and an understanding of shape that allows them to retain the ball for long periods, meaning new Mills were having to work very hard. Mossley broke through after 25 minutes and scored three quick goals. New Mills made one clear chance in the first half with a 25 yard shot from Perry Martine following good work from the team.
0 - 3 HALF TIME
The second half had New Mills making 2 subs and switching Lewis Jowett from right wing to goal. A much brighter start allowed New Mills to enjoy some possession and to start to create attacking opportunities. After a chance from a corner, which was cleared off the line by the excellent Mossley No.8, New Mills opened up the Mossley defence with Sam McLennan hitting the foot of the right hand post from 6 yards. Mossley immediately went down the other end and scored with a well crafted left foot drive past make shift keeper Lewis Jowett.
New Mills then won a penalty following an excellent driving run from Aidan Muffett who was pulled down just inside the Mossley box, but were unable to convert from the spot. Further goals were added with the game finishing 0-6 to Mossley.
0 - 6 FULL TIME
New Mills should take some positives from the game. I do not think we will come up against a better team this year and we were able for 60 minutes to match them for organisation and work rate. We also created a number of chances in the second period which would have made the score line look better, although we should compliment Mossley on their all round play.
The squad will learn from the experience and have the opportunity in three weeks to demonstrate this when we play them again.
