New Mills 1 Ilkeston 5 - Weds 10th Oct 12 - FA Youth Cup
The youth team’s FA Youth Cup adventure ended in the Second Qualifying Round as Ilkeston triumphed 5-1 at Church Lane on Wednesday evening.
Shortly after Grant Tobin’s opening goal midway through the opening half, it appeared as though The Millers had been handed a lifeline in the game when referee Mr Thompson pointed to the spot when he spotted a clear shirt pull in the area but that penalty decision was quickly rescinded when it was noticed that his assistant had raised a belated flag for offside prior to the infringement being committed.
Buoyed by that fortunate escape, Ilkeston scored three more times before the interval with the scorers being Jan Yeomans, Corey Grantham and Ryan Osborne and even missed a penalty of their own when Tobin dragged his effort wide of the target.
Trailing by four goals at the break, the home side’s fortunes were not helped when they were reduced to ten men two minutes into the second half when captain Jordan Cooper was adjudged to have brought down an Ilkeston attacker and with the defender being the last man, he was unfortunately shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Osborne stepped up and made no mistake from the subsequent spot kick to register his second strike of the evening.
Credit to the young New Mills side though as they did not let the numerical disadvantage affect them and after Alex Adrio hit the underside of the crossbar from the game’s third penalty, they eventually pulled an excellent goal back just after the hour when substitute Max Bradwell confidently finished a flowing passing move.
They were to be no further addition to the scoreline and whilst Ilkeston progress to meet Lincoln City in the next round, The Millers players should be very proud of their performances in The FA Youth Cup this season.
