Fundraising Weekend Review
" The sun shone, the band played and the brewey had to keep coming back ......"
Following the successful conclusion of the League season , it was party time at New Mills AFC last weekend as a series of successful events were held at the Club.
Due to the very generous sponsorship of LDW Electrical ( High Peak ) Limited, a marquee was erected at the ground on Wednesday and on the following evening, over 130 guests attended a Sportsman Evening. The marquee was dressed in amber and black to match the Club colours and pride of place went to the North West Counties League Division Two trophy which was displayed in front of the top table. The guests on the night were MC and host John Havern, ex Liverpool and Denmark midfielder Jan Molby and comedian Lea Roberts. The latter two enthralled the guests with their stories and jokes and a fantastic night was had by all.
The Club would like to thank all the following local businesses and organisations who supported the night -
LDW Electrical ( High Peak ) Limited
Alken Engineering
The New Mills Golf Club
AE Hancock Light Haulage
CJK Packaging Limited - sponsors of New Mills Youth Team
Reusch
Les Waterworth
Reddish Vulcans Junior Football Club

Friday night saw local band White Van Man play to a packed marquee. The band fronted by Emmerdale actor and New Mills resident Tony Audenshaw played a set with a wide range of songs to cater for the family audience and each one was greeted with much acclaim.
Saturday was Family Day with the emphasis on raising funds for the Craniofacial Unit at Alderhey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. Club member Tracy Shufflebotham organised a variety of events to help raise awareness of the Unit and to show her gratitude as her 13 month old son Ethan will shortly be undergoing an operation at Alderhey to correct deformities to his skull bones. Events on the day included a penalty shoot out against New Mills AFC's four goalkeepers, male waxing, a live band called The Lynk and Tracy herself got involved by agreeing to have her head shaved in return for sponsorship.

Tracy started her fund raising on Friday night where a collection from around the pubs in New Mills generated over £500. An auction of goods generously donated by local businesses took place also and this helped bump the total raised on the day to well over £1,200 and once other sponsorship monies are collected, the eventual total raised should be in excess of £2,500.
Football was back on the agenda on Sunday where a Manchester City Veterans XI played a New Mills AFC Guest XI.
The likes of Peter Barnes and Andy May turned out for City and the Millers side included ex Stockport County players Mike Flynn and Lee Todd alongside current Millers boss Tony Hancock. Despite the sweltering weather, the crowd saw a decent game and the New Mills side won 2-1 with goals from ex Miller Gary Williamson and Wally Adjet. |
