Between 1968 and 1970, Roy played for Manchester United as a junior in The Lancashire League youth teams coached by Wilf McGuinness and John Aston Senior. Upon returning to The UK after spells in Malta and America, Roy worked at Blundell Park scouting future opposition and prospective new players for Grimsby Town.
