About New Mills Football Club

New Mills A.F.C., one of the country’s most historic football clubs, is based in the town of New Mills in Derbyshire. Nicknamed The Millers, the club is presently the only professional football team in the town of 12,000. The Millers currently play in the Division One Southof the North West Counties Football League (known as the Hallmark Security League until 2020 due to sponsorship requirement), which is the tenth tier of the English football national league system.

Early Days

Founded in 1886, New Mills St George's, as it was originally known, is one of the oldest football clubs in England, if not the world. It played an important role in the nascent development of professional football in England during the late 19th century as it helped educate members of the public of the new standardised rules governing the game (The Football Association’s Laws of the Game). The club is also one of the founding members of the North West Counties League, which they helped to create in 1982 following the cessation of the Lancashire Combination and Cheshire County League.

New Mills proudly call the 1,400-seater Church Lane home, which has been the case since 9 September 1922 after spending years moving nomadically around the region. Interestingly, its first game at Church Lane holds the recordfor the highest attendance in the club’s history when 4,500 people watched them play against Hyde United in the Manchester Junior Cup.

Club Ownership

The club is under the ownership of club chairman Ray Coverley and his partner, Sue Hyde. The Millers’ operation is funded from sponsorships, gate receipts, clubhouse rental, the bar, and occasionally, contributions from Mr. Coverley himself. Mr. Coverley, who in previous incarnations also worked as a player and manager at the club, currently serves as the club’s administrator (and sometimes tends the bar as well).
